The default choice. Twenty-four gallons, 48 inches long, sits directly over the wheel hump and works on either side of the van.

If you have not got a strong reason to pick something else, this is the tank we reach for. A centered profile means it straddles the wheel hump instead of dodging it, so you do not have to commit to driver or passenger side at the design stage — genuinely useful when the layout is still moving.

Twenty-four gallons is the sweet spot for two people who are not showering indoors: roughly five to seven days between fills at conservative use, and only about 200 lb of water when full, which most rear suspensions never notice.

Should you buy this tank, or a different one in the range?

  • Buy the SP-C-24 if you want a straightforward, side-agnostic tank with a mainstream capacity.
  • Buy the SP-C-20 if you need it slimmer — 11" deep instead of 13".
  • Buy the SP-C-36 if you want maximum centered capacity and can accept 16" of depth.
  • Buy the offset SP-L or SP-R tanks if you need the tank to sit fore or aft of the wheel well rather than over it.

Specifications

Capacity 24 gallons
Dimensions 48" L × 16" H × 13" D
Dry weight 28 lb
Weight full Approx. 228 lb including water
Material Rotomolded in the USA from BPA-free, food-grade polyethylene
Ports — both ends (2) 1.5" NPT (spun closed) + (2) 1/2" NPT on either end
Ports — top (1) 1.5" NPT (spun closed) for fill or level sender
Pressurization Unpressurized — must be vented

Ports duplicated on both ends is what makes this tank side-agnostic: whichever way round it goes in, you have a usable outlet at the end nearest your pump. These tanks are not pressure vessels. They must be vented to atmosphere — a sealed tank will balloon on a hot day and collapse inward when the pump draws it down.

What ships to you

  • (1) SP-C-24 24 gallon rotomolded tank
  • Fittings, hose and mounting hardware sold separately

Installing it: what actually happens

This is the easiest install in the range. Because ports are duplicated at both ends you can orient the tank to suit the pump rather than the other way round, which usually saves a meter of hose and a couple of elbows.

We still drill on the bench. Even one hole-saw pass inside a finished van puts polyethylene curls into every seam of the floor.

  • Decide pump location first, then choose which end to open.
  • 2-1/8" hole saw, deburr, rinse, dry, then thread.
  • Cradle the full 48" length; two straps over the top into floor anchors or wall ribs.
  • ProMaster builds: a 3.5" riser built into the subfloor, not shimmed afterwards.

Questions we get asked about this part

Do I have to drill the ports myself?

On the wheel-well tanks the 1/2" NPT ports arrive open and ready to thread. The 1.5" ports are spun closed at the factory so you only open the ones your plumbing actually uses. Open them with a hole saw on the bench, before the tank goes anywhere near the van, and vacuum the shavings out. Plastic chips inside a fresh water tank are a mistake you only make once.

Does the tank need a vent?

Yes. It is designed to run unpressurized. Run a vent line from the top 1.5" port up above the maximum fill level and out through the floor or a body vent. Skip it and the tank will deform on a hot day, then pull its walls in when the pump runs.

How much weight am I adding to the van?

Water weighs roughly 8.34 lb per gallon, so 24 gallons is about 200 lb of payload once full, on top of the dry weight of the tank. Put that number in your build budget before you order rather than after — it is the most commonly forgotten figure in a van conversion.

Can I drink out of it?

The vessel itself is BPA-free food-grade polyethylene, so the tank is potable-rated. What actually determines whether your water is safe to drink is everything downstream of it: the fill port, the hose, the pump and the filtration. We plumb potable systems with NSF-61 rated hose and a carbon block at the tap.
