Camper Van Insulation Kits — Pre-Cut 3M Thinsulate

Insulation is the one system you can never go back and fix. Once your walls, cabinets, and electrical are in, that cavity is closed for the life of the van — so this is the place to spend an extra weekend and an extra few hundred dollars. We stock pre-cut 3M™ Thinsulate™ kits cut to the actual cavity shapes of the 2007+ Mercedes Sprinter (144, 170, 170 EXT, low and high roof), the 2015+ Ford Transit (148" and 148" EXT high roof), and the 2014+ RAM ProMaster (136", 159", 159" EXT high roof). Each kit ships with a diagram showing where every piece goes, which turns the worst day of a conversion — tracing cardboard templates onto rolls of material — into an afternoon. We also carry the NVC Wall Framing Kit, an all-wood CNC framing system for the Sprinter that solves the problem Thinsulate alone can't: the steel ribs and furring strips that bridge heat straight through your insulation.

How to Choose Van Insulation

1. Understand what Thinsulate is actually good at

3M™ Thinsulate™ is a non-woven acoustic absorber: extremely fine polypropylene microfibers blended with heavier polyester fibers to strengthen the web, all contained in a double black, double-embossed scrim. It does three things well in a vehicle:

  • Acoustic absorption per unit weight. The microfibers eat high-frequency noise; the coarse fibers give loft and recovery. Road noise drops noticeably.
  • Hydrophobic behavior. The fibers don't absorb water, so they resist mold and mildew — a real consideration in Appalachian humidity, where a wet spray-foam cavity becomes a science experiment.
  • Conformability. It compresses and springs back, so it fills irregular cavities without cutting rigid board into a hundred pieces.

What it isn't: a vapor barrier, and not a magic R-value. Thin material in a shallow cavity is thin material. The performance win comes from filling the cavity completely and consistently, not from a headline number.

2. Know exactly what a kit covers — and what it doesn't

Every Thinsulate kit we carry covers the cargo area ceiling, walls, and open door cavities. It does not include:

  • Material for the cab area
  • Any portion of the vehicle floor
  • Material to stuff between beams, fully covered cavities, or partially covered cavities

If you have factory windows, you'll have leftover pieces. Budget separately for the floor (see van flooring — most builders run rigid foam or a plywood subfloor there) and for the cab if you want it. ProMaster note: the high-roof kit is compatible with low-roof 136" and 159" ProMasters, you'll just be trimming pieces down.

3. Thermal bridging is the failure mode nobody photographs

You can pack a van full of Thinsulate and still get cold walls and condensation streaks if your framing is steel. Metal furring strips and screwed-to-the-rib battens conduct heat straight from your finished wall panel to the cold outer skin. That's where interior moisture finds its dew point, and that's where the drips come from.

This is why we carry the NVC Wall Framing Kit for the Sprinter 144 and 170: the entire structure is wood, so it acts as a continuous thermal break instead of a heat highway. It hooks into the van's factory structure and bonds with construction adhesive, so in a full install only seven fasteners ever touch the van — threading into interior roof ribs near the slider and headliner, none through the body or the exterior skin. Fewer holes means fewer rust sites, which in a salted-road climate is not a small thing. Every pillar and ceiling rib has a built-in wire chase with pre-drilled zip-tie holes, so your wiring never rubs on cut sheet metal.

4. Control moisture, don't just add R-value

Vans generate moisture — breathing, cooking, wet gear. Three rules from the shop:

  1. Ventilate mechanically. A roof fan running low overnight moves more moisture out than any material choice keeps in.
  2. Don't seal insulation into a cavity where it can't dry to the inside. Thinsulate's hydrophobic fiber and open structure are an advantage here.
  3. Watch metal-to-interior contact points — window frames, floor edges, and any bracket that penetrates the wall.

5. Match your insulation ambition to your HVAC plan

Every A/C manufacturer we carry says the same thing in their own words: a rooftop unit's BTU rating assumes a properly insulated vehicle. Climate Command explicitly ties unit performance to insulation quality. If you plan to run a 12V or 48V rooftop A/C, insulation is not the place to economize — you'll pay for it every night in amp-hours.

6. Plan the lead time

Thinsulate kits are made to order; allow 1–2 weeks before shipping. Free shipping in the lower 48. If your build has a hard deadline, order insulation early — it's the item that most often holds up a schedule because nothing else can go in until it's done.

Frequently Asked Questions

What R-value does Thinsulate give me? 3M publishes performance for the material, but in a van the honest answer is that installed thickness in an irregular steel cavity matters more than any lab number. Thinsulate's real advantages are acoustic absorption per unit weight, hydrophobic fibers that resist mold, and conformability that lets you actually fill a cavity completely. A perfectly installed conformable insulation beats a higher-rated rigid board that leaves gaps at every rib.

Thinsulate vs. spray foam vs. rigid foam board — what do you install? Thinsulate in walls, ceilings, and door cavities; rigid board under the floor. We don't spray foam vans. Spray foam is unforgiving of vehicle flex, it makes future access and repairs miserable, and if water ever gets behind it you'll never know until the rust is structural. Thinsulate can be pulled out and put back if you need to chase a wire.

Do I need to insulate the floor too? Yes, and it isn't in these kits. Most builds run a thin rigid foam layer plus a plywood subfloor before the finished 2tec2 or Lonseal top floor. Keep the total stack thin — every inch of floor is an inch of standing height you lose.

Will insulation alone stop condensation? No. Condensation is a moisture and dew-point problem. You need insulation and ventilation and a break in the thermal path. That's the whole argument for wood framing over metal furring: if there's a cold metal path from the outer skin to your interior, humid air will find it and condense on it no matter how much material is in the cavity.

Does the kit include material for the cab and the floor? No — cargo area ceiling, walls, and open door cavities only. No cab, no floor, and no material for stuffing between beams or into fully covered cavities. Vans with factory windows end up with spare pieces.

How long does a pre-cut kit take to install? Plan a weekend for the cargo area with two people. The pieces are labeled to a diagram, so most of the time goes into fastening: 3M 90-class spray adhesive on the large ceiling panels, and mechanical retention wherever gravity is working against you. The NVC framing kit that follows it installs in roughly 10 hours.
