Driver-side ProMaster offset. Balances a passenger-side galley without a riser or a shim under it.

Most ProMaster layouts run the galley along the passenger side, because that is where the slider is. That puts the water on the driver side, and this is the tank shaped to go there: 28 gallons contoured to the ProMaster driver-side wheel housing, 48" long, 20" tall.

Buy it in a pair with the PM-R-28 if you want a matched fresh and grey system with the load split evenly across the van.

Should you buy this tank, or a different one in the range?

  • Buy the PM-L-28 if you have a ProMaster and the tank belongs on the driver side.
  • Buy the PM-R-28 for the passenger side.
  • Buy the PM-C-28 if you want a reversible centered tank.
  • Buy both L and R for a balanced 56-gallon fresh-plus-grey system.

Confirmed fitment

Optimized for Ram ProMaster — driver side wheel well
Also fits Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ford Transit, driver side
Sprinter/Transit note An additional gap may exist at the top of the well because those vans have smaller wheel wells
Other platforms Box trucks, trailers and custom builds where dimensions allow

These tanks are not pressure vessels. They must be vented to atmosphere — a sealed tank will balloon on a hot day and collapse inward when the pump draws it down.

What ships to you

  • (1) PM-L-28 28 gallon rotomolded tank
  • Fittings, hose and mounting hardware sold separately

Installing it: what actually happens

On the driver side you are working around the fuel filler and, on some builds, the shore power inlet. Decide where the gravity fill goes before you set the tank — ProMaster owners routinely discover that the obvious spot for a fill port is the spot the fuel filler already owns.

The tank sits over the arch and the pan can go flat on the ProMaster floor. Strap high: 20" of tank at 265 lb full wants restraint at the top, not just the bottom.

  • Confirm your exterior fill-port location against the fuel filler before drilling anything.
  • Two 1/2" ports arrive open; the 1.5" ports need drilling.
  • Strap across the upper third of the tank into the wall ribs.
  • Foam the interface between the pan and the tank so it cannot chatter on washboard.

Questions we get asked about this part

Do I have to drill the ports myself?

On the wheel-well tanks the 1/2" NPT ports arrive open and ready to thread. The 1.5" ports are spun closed at the factory so you only open the ones your plumbing actually uses. Open them with a hole saw on the bench, before the tank goes anywhere near the van, and vacuum the shavings out. Plastic chips inside a fresh water tank are a mistake you only make once.

Does the tank need a vent?

Yes. It is designed to run unpressurized. Run a vent line from the top 1.5" port up above the maximum fill level and out through the floor or a body vent. Skip it and the tank will deform on a hot day, then pull its walls in when the pump runs.

How much weight am I adding to the van?

Water weighs roughly 8.34 lb per gallon, so 28 gallons is about 234 lb of payload once full, on top of the dry weight of the tank. Put that number in your build budget before you order rather than after — it is the most commonly forgotten figure in a van conversion.

Can I drink out of it?

The vessel itself is BPA-free food-grade polyethylene, so the tank is potable-rated. What actually determines whether your water is safe to drink is everything downstream of it: the fill port, the hose, the pump and the filtration. We plumb potable systems with NSF-61 rated hose and a carbon block at the tap.
