The Original Puffy is built to be durable, packable and warm, and it is designed to go from the patio to the campsite without a change of role. In a van that translates to a blanket that lives on the bed, gets pulled out at a trailhead, goes on the ground at a picnic bench and packs back down small.

The DWR coating on the outer face is the detail that matters in a van. Spilled coffee, wet dog, condensation off a window in the morning — it beads and wipes rather than soaking through into the insulation. A cotton throw in the same situation is damp until you get to a laundromat.

Living with it in a van

The trick with a puffy blanket in a van is not to store it compressed all the time. Stuffed permanently, synthetic insulation gradually loses loft, and loft is warmth. Keep it loose on the bed and stuff it only when you are moving.

It also earns its place as a windbreak. Clipped or draped across a slider door opening on a cold evening it makes a surprising difference to how long you want to sit with the door open.

• Store it loose, not compressed, when the van is parked.
• Wipe spills promptly — DWR gives you time, not immunity.
• No fabric softener when you wash it. It kills the DWR.
• Refresh the DWR with a wash-in or spray treatment when water stops beading.

What does the DWR coating actually do?

DWR is a durable water repellent finish applied to the outer face. It makes water bead and roll off instead of soaking in, which is what makes an Original Puffy stain, dirt and spill resistant. It is a finish, not a membrane — the blanket is not waterproof, and the DWR wears down over time and washes. It can be refreshed with a wash-in or spray-on DWR treatment.

How do I wash it?

Follow Rumpl’s own care instructions, which come with the blanket. As a general rule for technical synthetics: cold, gentle cycle, mild detergent with no fabric softener, and no bleach. Fabric softener is the enemy of a DWR finish — it coats the fibres and kills the water repellency.

Why do we stock blankets at a van parts shop?

Because we build vans and we know what actually gets used in them. A packable, wipe-clean, water-resistant blanket lives in a van in a way a cotton throw does not: it goes on the bed, over your knees at a trailhead, on the ground at a picnic table, and then packs back into a stuff sack instead of taking up half a cupboard.

Solid or pattern?

Purely aesthetic — the construction is the same. Solids disappear into a build; patterns are the ones that end up in photographs.
