A 6.5-inch component system that drops into the Transit’s factory door locations and plugs into the factory connectors. No cutting, no rewiring, no adapter harness.
The Transit’s factory front speakers are the weakest part of an otherwise decent cab, and the usual fix — generic 6.5-inch coaxials, an adapter ring, a butchered harness and a tweeter taped to the A-pillar — is a lot of work for a marginal result.
The EM-FDF1 is the alternative: a component system engineered specifically for the Ford Transit, using vehicle-specific mounts and the original plugs. Woofers into the factory door locations, tweeters into their vehicle-specific mounts, crossovers inline. It is a one-for-one swap, and it is tuned for the Transit cabin rather than for a bench in a showroom.
Is this the upgrade you want?
- Buy this if you have a Ford Transit or Transit Custom (7th generation) and want a genuine sound improvement without modifying the vehicle.
- It works on the factory head unit. At 90 dB sensitivity (1 W/1 m) it plays loud and clean off stock power — you do not need an amplifier to hear the difference.
- You can still add an amp later. 50 W RMS handling and a 4 Ω load suit a modest external amplifier if you go that way.
- Not for you if your van is not a Transit — the mounts and connectors are vehicle-specific, which is the whole point.

“Plug and play” is a phrase that gets used loosely in car audio. Here it means the connectors match the factory plugs and the mounts match the factory locations — you are not making an adapter, you are unplugging one speaker and plugging in another.

The absence of ferrofluid in the tweeter is a durability decision as much as a sonic one. Ferrofluid dries out over years of heat cycling and dulls a tweeter’s top end — and a van cab in summer is about the harshest heat-cycling environment a speaker sees.

Installing it: an evening, not a weekend
Door cards off, factory speaker unplugged and unbolted, EM-FDF1 woofer in, plug reconnected. The crossovers live inside the door or behind the card, and the tweeters go into their vehicle-specific mounts. Two doors, no drilling, no soldering.
The one thing worth doing while the cards are off: a couple of sheets of sound-deadening mat on the outer door skin behind the speaker. It costs very little, it takes twenty extra minutes, and it does more for perceived bass than another fifty watts would.
- Trim removal tools save door clips. Metal screwdrivers destroy them.
- Deaden the outer door skin while the card is off — the single best value-add on this job.
- Mount the crossovers where they cannot rattle against the door structure and where the window mechanism cannot reach them.
- Check tweeter phase by ear before you put the cards back on; a reversed tweeter is a five-minute fix now and an hour later.
Questions we get asked about this kit
Do I need an amplifier?
No. At 90 dB sensitivity the system is efficient enough to sound genuinely good on the factory head unit. An amplifier will add headroom if you want it later, but the upgrade is worthwhile without one.
Will it fit my Transit?
It is engineered for the Ford Transit and Transit Custom, 7th generation, using vehicle-specific connectors and mounts. If you are unsure which generation you have, send us the year and we will confirm before you order.
Do I need a separate subwoofer?
Not necessarily. The aluminum cone woofer with its Cambridge surround produces genuinely punchy bass attacks and precise mids, and many owners find a separate subwoofer unnecessary. If you listen to bass-heavy music at high volume, you will still want one.
What does the LCR resonant circuit in the crossover do?
It is a tuning network in the crossover, specifically optimized for Transit cabin acoustics. A van cab is a strange acoustic space — hard surfaces, a huge windshield, an asymmetric listening position — and a crossover tuned for it sounds noticeably more even than a generic one.
Why does “no ferrofluid” matter?
Ferrofluid is used to cool and damp tweeters, but it degrades with heat over years and takes the top end with it. Leaving it out keeps playback vivid and dynamic for the life of the speaker, which matters in a vehicle that bakes in the sun.
