MobiFrame SAF42 / SAF43 Seat Bed - 2 or 3 Passenger Bench That Lies Flat

A certified 2- or 3-passenger bench that reclines from upright to fully horizontal — the seat and the bed, in one piece of furniture.

A seat bed solves the hardest problem in a small van: you cannot afford floor space for both a bench and a bed, and a home-built convertible is not a restraint system. The SAF42/43 is both, and it is tested to FMVSS/CMVSS 207 and 210 — the seating and the seat belt anchorage standards.

Practically, it goes from upright traveling bench to flat bed via a tab and lever, with extra padding built in for the bed configuration and storage underneath including a lockable drawer and soft-sided bags. There is a spring-loaded arm so it glides and locks into place rather than being dragged.

Which MobiFrame seat is right for your build?

• Choose 97 cm for two passengers.
• Choose 118 cm or 120 cm for three passengers — pick the one that fits your van’s interior width and your cabinet plan.
• Add the installation plate unless you already have a MobiFrame 2007+ Mercedes Sprinter floor system. It is required otherwise.
• Consider a full MobiFrame floor instead if you want to slide the bench the length of the van — see the manufacturer note below.
• Budget for professional installation. These benches are heavy.

Mounting and compatibility

From the manufacturer, on the mounting plate: it is intended to create a safe connection with the floor of the van and to let the seat be removed and reinstalled when needed — there is not much room to slide the bench along it. If you want to move the seat bed from the front of the van to the back, a full floor is always the better option. The manufacturer also notes that the bench seats are very heavy and should be removed and reinstalled by a professional upfitter.

Mounting, freight and what to expect on delivery day

This is the one MobiFrame product we would not tell a first-time builder to install alone. It is heavy enough that the manufacturer recommends a professional upfitter for removal and reinstallation, and it is a certified restraint carrying up to three passengers — the anchorage is not somewhere to improvise.

If you know you want to reposition the bench regularly, buy a full MobiFrame floor system rather than the plate. The plate is for a fixed location with removability; the floor is for repositioning.

• Plan for a professional upfitter, or at minimum for four people and a plan.
• The mounting plate is 48" of rail against a 33.5" base — it allows removal and reinstallation, not repositioning.
• Read the MobiFrame seatbed mounting plate install instructions and the SAF42/SAF43 technical drawing before you order, so you know your clearances.
• Measure the reclined footprint. A fully horizontal bench is longer than the upright one, and it has to land somewhere.
• Curbside or dock freight delivery.

Questions we get asked about this part

What do the safety certifications actually mean?

FMVSS and CMVSS are the US and Canadian federal motor vehicle safety standards. FMVSS/CMVSS 207 covers seating systems — the seat structure and its anchorage. A seat that meets it has been physically tested as an assembly. That certification depends on the seat being mounted the way it was tested, which is why the floor plate kit matters as much as the seat.

Can I fit a child seat?

Yes. These seats have ISOFIX anchor points and a top tether anchor. Note where the top tether attaches: the rear lower frame of the seat bottom, not the bulkhead behind it. Check the images and the seat diagram before you assume your child seat strap will reach.

What is the difference between 118 cm and 120 cm?

Both are three-passenger widths; they are two millimeter-level size options so you can match the bench to your van’s interior width and your cabinet layout. Measure the space between your finished wall panels and choose the one that leaves you the clearance you want.

Do I need the mounting plate?

Yes, unless you have a MobiFrame 2007+ Mercedes Sprinter floor system. Without a floor with integrated L-track, the plate is what creates the certified connection to the vehicle.

Can it slide the length of the van?

Not on the mounting plate — the manufacturer is explicit that there is not much room to slide the bench on it. For fore-and-aft repositioning you want a full MobiFrame floor system.
