Driver-side twin of the SP-R-33 — the highest-capacity interior tank NW Conversions builds for a Sprinter wheel well.
Most van layouts put the galley and the sink on the passenger side, which means the water usually has to live on the driver side. That is what this tank is for: 33 gallons, 48" long, 20" tall, sitting behind the driver-side wheel well and against the wall where a bed platform can pass straight over it.
It is the same tool as the SP-R-33, mirrored. If you are building a two-tank system — fresh on one side, grey on the other — a matched left and right pair is the cleanest way to keep the van sitting level on its springs.
Should you buy this tank, or a different one in the range?
- Buy the SP-L-33 if your water needs to be on the driver side and you have 20" of clear wall height above the wheel well.
- Buy the SP-R-33 for the passenger-side version.
- Buy both if you want a 33 gallon fresh tank and a 33 gallon grey tank with the load balanced side to side.
- Choose the SP-L-20 or SP-C-20 if 20" of height is too much for your bed platform.

These tanks are not pressure vessels. They must be vented to atmosphere — a sealed tank will balloon on a hot day and collapse inward when the pump draws it down.

Installing it: what actually happens
The driver-side install is usually the easier of the two, because the tank sits behind the wheel well rather than in front of it and you are not fighting the slider door step.
What catches people out is the fill. Running a gravity fill from a driver-side exterior port to the top port on this tank means crossing the wheel arch. Route it before you build the bed, or you will be taking the bed apart again.
- Dry-fit against bare metal first, mark ports with tape, then drill on the bench.
- A 2-1/8" hole saw opens the spun-closed 1.5" NPT ports cleanly. Deburr and rinse.
- Two straps minimum over a full-length cradle. This tank is tall and 300 lb full.
- Keep the top port reachable for a future level sender.
Questions we get asked about this part
Do I have to drill the ports myself?
On the wheel-well tanks the 1/2" NPT ports arrive open and ready to thread. The 1.5" ports are spun closed at the factory so you only open the ones your plumbing actually uses. Open them with a hole saw on the bench, before the tank goes anywhere near the van, and vacuum the shavings out. Plastic chips inside a fresh water tank are a mistake you only make once.
Does the tank need a vent?
Yes. It is designed to run unpressurized. Run a vent line from the top 1.5" port up above the maximum fill level and out through the floor or a body vent. Skip it and the tank will deform on a hot day, then pull its walls in when the pump runs.
How much weight am I adding to the van?
Water weighs roughly 8.34 lb per gallon, so 33 gallons is about 275 lb of payload once full, on top of the dry weight of the tank. Put that number in your build budget before you order rather than after — it is the most commonly forgotten figure in a van conversion.
Can this be mounted on the passenger side?
It can be placed on either side, but the shape is cut with the driver-side wheel well in mind. If it is going on the passenger side, buy the SP-R-33 instead and save yourself the fitting work.
Can I drink out of it?
The vessel itself is BPA-free food-grade polyethylene, so the tank is potable-rated. What actually determines whether your water is safe to drink is everything downstream of it: the fill port, the hose, the pump and the filtration. We plumb potable systems with NSF-61 rated hose and a carbon block at the tap.
